REGINA V C.J. [COURT OF QUEEN'S BENCH, CALGARY]
C was charged with numerous property and weapons offences under the Criminal Code. Before retaining Calgary criminal lawyer Curtis Mennie, C chose to run his own bail hearing in front of a justice of the peace and was ordered detained on the secondary grounds of bail (substantial likelihood that the offender will commit further offences in the community). Following his detention order, Calgary defence lawyer Curtis Mennie was retained to conduct a bail review in the Court of Queen’s Bench to have C released. After meeting with C and his family, a release plan was crafted that Curtis Mennie knew would be appropriate for him to be released. At the bail review the Crown argued that C should stay in jail until his charges were dealt with, Calgary criminal lawyer Curtis Mennie successfully argued that C should be granted bail. C was ordered to be released.
