REGINA V M.M. [PROVINCIAL COURT, CALGARY]
M was charged with break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the Criminal Code. M had previously had another lawyer who advised M to plead guilty to a lessor offence. After retaining Calgary Defence lawyer Curtis Mennie, Curtis met with M and it was very apparent that M was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the alleged offence. Curtis Mennie arranged for M to meet with the mental health diversion workers from Alberta Health Services where it was determined that she was a suitable candidate for their program. Following 3 months of working with the mental health diversion team all charges were withdrawn against M.
